The Independent art fair in New York is on the brink of its exciting 16th edition, scheduled for May 8 to 11 at Spring Studios, located in the lively Tribeca district.

This year, the fair aims to inspire with an exceptional lineup of 82 galleries, all dedicated to celebrating the spirit of creativity and innovation in the art sector.

Esteemed Galleries and New Initiatives

Among the esteemed galleries participating are well-known names such as the Approach, Daniel Faria Gallery, Corbett vs.

Dempsey, and Night Gallery, along with others like Bradley Ertaskiran, Maureen Paley, Ryan Lee, and Hannah Traore Gallery.

A noteworthy highlight for this edition is the introduction of “Independent Debuts,” a new initiative aimed at showcasing rising stars in the art world.

This initiative reinforces the fair’s longstanding tradition of providing many artists with the opportunity to present their very first solo exhibitions in New York, often before they partner with local galleries or institutions.

Independent Debuts and Past Highlights

Last year’s fair was particularly remarkable, featuring artist Deborah Joyce Holman, who debuted her nine-hour film, *Moment 2 (2022)*, in collaboration with the London-based Ginny on Frederick gallery.

This groundbreaking piece has since found a spot in the Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection, a triumph made possible through a partnership with Independent that focused on securing matching funds for its acquisition.

This time around, the Independent Debuts will present 22 solo showcases, giving a platform to artists who have yet to exhibit solo in New York.

Notable participants include Amel Bashier from Addis Fine Art, Gunnel Wåhlstrand represented by Andréhn-Schiptjenko, and Sameen Agha at Indigo+Madder.

Exhibitors and Future Talents

Elizabeth Dee, the visionary behind the Independent, shared her enthusiasm for the fair, noting its unique ability to host more solo debuts in New York than any other fair in the city.

She pointed out that many celebrated artists—like Oscar Murillo and Nicolas Party—started their journeys at Independent, emphasizing the fair’s role in uncovering and nurturing exceptional emerging talent.
